The Mother Of All Antioxidants

Here I am drinking a glass of wine BUT did you know that drinking alcohol depletes your glutathione levels?

What's all the hype about this little molecule called glutathione?

Well, take a minute to read on and learn the simplified version of why glutathione is SO IMPORTANT!

Glutathione

Glutathione (pronounced gloot-a-thigh-own) is considered the “mother of all antioxidants”. It is a tripeptide, small protein made of 3 amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. It’s found in surprisingly high levels in most cells. Glutathione is implicated in many cellular functions including antioxidant protection and detoxification. It is also essential for maintenance of cell membrane integrity in red blood cells.

Critical roles of glutathione:

  • Direct chemical neutralization of free radicals

  • Cofactor for several antioxidant enzymes

  • Regeneration of vitamin C and E

  • Aids in liver detoxification

  • Crucial in supporting skin health

  • Detoxification of heavy metals: Transportation of mercury out of cells and the brain

  • Regulation of cell growth

  • Vital to mitochondrial function and energy production

Diseases associated with glutathione depletion:

  • Neurodegenerative diseases

  • Pulmonary diseases- such as asthma

  • Immune disorders- autoimmune disease

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Liver disease

  • Aging process itself

Repletion:

Glutathione is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and foods rich in glutathione do not appear to contribute to increases in intracellular glutathione levels. Supplementing with NAC appears safe and beneficial in increasing intracellular glutathione levels. Also, intravenous glutathione and IM injections have shown to be beneficial in increasing glutathione levels.

Foods rich in cysteine are generally high protein foods: meats, yogurt, wheat germ and eggs.

Let's be real, are you eating any of these foods? I know I'm definitely not. I avoid dairy, wheat, and eggs at least 80% of the time. I have this 80/20 rule... I follow a clean diet about 80% of the time and allow room for error about 20% of the time.

I usually recommend adding a glutathione push to any of your IVs!
